How an author carries one idea across an entire paragraph using pronouns, this/that/these/those, such, synonyms, nominalization, and related vocabulary — and how to trace that chain instead of reading each sentence in isolation.

Introduction

Lesson 20 established that a paragraph is one argument, not a pile of sentences. Today's question follows naturally: how does the author keep that argument feeling like one continuous thread, sentence after sentence? A skilled writer almost never repeats the same noun five times in a row. Instead, they reach for pronouns, this/that/these/ those, such, synonyms, nominalizations, and a whole network of related vocabulary — constantly renaming the same handful of ideas so the paragraph never feels repetitive, yet never loses the thread either. This whole system of connection is called cohesion, and learning to trace it is one of the fastest ways to read a dense paragraph well.

What Is Cohesion?

Cohesion = the way a text's different parts stay connected through grammar and vocabulary, rather than through logic alone.

The company introduced a new software system. The system reduced processing time. It also improved data management. This improvement allowed employees to complete tasks more quickly.

Follow one thread through all four sentences: software system → the system → it → this improvement. Every link is related to the one before it, which is exactly why the paragraph doesn't feel broken into four disconnected statements.

Cohesion ≠ Coherence

Grammatical connection and logical connection are two different things

Cohesion is grammar and vocabulary connecting sentences on the surface. Coherence is the ideas themselves making logical sense together.

John bought a computer. The computer is expensive. Expensive products require careful consideration.

This has real cohesion — computer → computer → expensive products — but the paragraph's overall logical purpose isn't very clear. A text can be cohesive on the surface without being especially coherent underneath, which is exactly why both checks matter separately.

Reference Chains

One idea, renamed across several sentences

A reference chain is a single noun or idea, tracked as it gets renamed by different expressions across a paragraph.

The company introduced a new system. The system was expensive. It required additional training. This investment created short-term difficulties.

Chain: new system → the system → it → this investment. Four different expressions, one continuous referent.

Pronoun Reference at Paragraph Level

The company introduced a new platform. It was expensive.it = platform, unambiguous.

The company introduced a new platform, and it required extensive training. — the surrounding context still points it back to platform, even inside a longer, busier sentence. The method from Lesson 10 hasn't changed; you're simply applying it across a whole paragraph instead of a single sentence now.

"This" Refers to a Whole Idea, Not Just a Noun

This can package an entire previous event, not one word

The company reduced its operating costs by 20%. This allowed it to invest in new technology.

This doesn't refer only to "20%." It refers to the entire previous event: the company reduced operating costs by 20%. Treating this as if it only pointed to the nearest noun is one of the most common reference mistakes a reader can make — always check whether it's packaging a whole idea instead.

That works the same way

The system failed repeatedly. That created serious problems for users.

That → the previous event/situation (the system's repeated failure), not a single noun.

"These" and "Those" for Plural Reference

"Such" Points Back to a Category

Poor communication can create misunderstandings. Such problems are common in large organizations.

Here such problems = this kind of communication-related problemsuch is naming a whole category, not one specific instance.

"This" + Noun: A Common Academic Pattern

A brand-new noun, standing in for the whole previous sentence

The study found a significant relationship between stress and sleep. This finding suggests that…

This finding = the previous study result. This pattern is extremely productive in academic writing — this result, this evidence, this observation, this pattern, this approach can all put a fresh label on whatever information came just before, without repeating a single word of it.

Nominalization Creates Cohesion

A verb becomes a noun, then that noun becomes the next sentence's subject

Researchers analyzed the data carefully. This analysis revealed several patterns.

First sentence's verb: analyzed. Second sentence's subject: analysis. Lesson 18's nominalization is doing double duty here — the author turns an earlier action into a noun, then uses that noun as the hook for the next sentence.

The company implemented a new policy. The implementation initially caused confusion.

Chain: implemented → implementation — one of the most common forms lexical cohesion takes in reports and news writing.

Verb, then noun, then pronoun — three links in one chain

Researchers examined the relationship between stress and sleep. This examination revealed several limitations.

Chain: examined → examination → this examination. The author converts an action into a noun, then refers back to that noun with a determiner — two cohesion techniques stacked in a row.

Synonyms Carry the Same Referent

Different words, same entity — read contextually, not word by word

The company introduced a new system. The organization expects the system to improve efficiency. The business plans to expand its use.

Company → organization → business — all pointing at the same referent, even though they aren't identical dictionary synonyms.

A near-synonym is not always interchangeable

Company, organization, and business are close enough to track as the same referent inside one paragraph, but they are not exact synonyms in every context — a legal document, for instance, might treat them quite differently. Track the reference relationship the paragraph is actually building, not just a dictionary definition.

Lexical Chains

A family of related words, not one word repeated

A lexical chain is a sequence of words related to the same topic, running through a paragraph without ever needing to reuse a single word.

Education requires effective teaching. Good teachers help students develop important skills. These learners may improve their knowledge through regular practice.

Chain: education → teaching → teachers → students → learners → skills → knowledge → practice — every word belongs to the same conceptual field, even though none of them repeat.

Read the field, not just the individual words

If you look at education, teaching, students, learning as separate vocabulary items, they're just four unrelated words to memorize. An advanced reader instead recognizes them as one lexical network — and once you see the network, the paragraph's topic jumps out almost immediately.

Two more lexical chains, spotted in one pass

Technology: Digital technology has changed modern communication. Online platforms allow users to exchange messages, documents, and data rapidly. These systems have also changed workplace collaboration. Chain: technology → communication → platforms → messages → documents → data → systems → collaboration. Central topic: digital communication technology.

Business: The company faced declining sales. Lower revenue reduced its ability to make new investments. As a result, management postponed several projects and reduced operating costs. Chain: company → sales → revenue → investments → management → projects → operating costs. Central topic: the company's financial difficulties.

Reference Chain and Lexical Chain Working Together

Reference chain: billing system → platform → this change → these improvements — one entity, renamed four times.

Lexical chain: billing → automated → processes → manual work → processing speed → employees → tasks — the surrounding topic vocabulary.

Once you can see both chains at once, the paragraph's information flow becomes visible almost instantly.

"It" vs. "This"

A specific entity, or the whole surrounding event

It usually points to one specific noun or entity: The system was updated. It now works faster.it = the system.

This more often points to a whole previous event or idea: The system was updated. This improved performance.this = the update itself, not just "the system."

Mixing these up — reading this as if it only meant the nearest noun — is a small habit worth correcting early, because academic and business writing lean on this constantly to summarize a whole preceding clause.

"This" + Abstract Noun in Academic Writing

All six phrases do the same job: take a whole previous sentence's content and give it a fresh, compact label to build the next sentence around.

The Former and the Latter

Naming the first-mentioned and second-mentioned of two items

Traditional systems and digital platforms have different strengths. The former are often easier to understand, while the latter can process information more efficiently.

Former/latter only works cleanly for two nearby items

Former and latter refer back to exactly two previously mentioned entities, and they work best when those two entities were just mentioned. Reach for them across a longer list, or several sentences later, and a reader has to scroll back to figure out which is which — check for exactly two candidates in the immediately preceding sentence before trusting either word.

Respectively pairs up a list, item by item

The first and second systems require 4 GB and 8 GB of memory, respectively.

Mapping: first → 4 GB, second → 8 GB. Respectively signals a one-to-one pairing between two parallel lists — reading it correctly means matching the items up in order, not at random.

Repetition Is Not Always Bad

Key technical terms are often repeated on purpose

Machine learning models require training data. The quality of the training data affects model performance. Poor training data can produce unreliable predictions.

Training data repeats three times here — deliberately, because it's the paragraph's key technical concept, and swapping in a synonym each time would only blur precision that the writer actually wants. "Good writing never repeats a word" is not a reliable rule; precise technical terms are a clear exception.

Repetition and variation, side by side in one paragraph

The new system was introduced in January. The platform replaced several older tools. This technology improved data processing. However, the system still required additional configuration.

System → platform → technology → system — three different labels and one repeated one, all referring to the same central entity.

"One/Ones", "Another", "The Other", "Others"

Small substitute words that stand in for a whole noun

One / onesSeveral methods were considered. The researchers selected the most effective one. (one = method.) Plural: The older systems were replaced with newer ones. (ones = systems.)

AnotherThe first method was relatively simple. Another required more resources. (another = another method — an additional or different one.)

The other — with exactly two items: Two methods were considered. One was expensive; the other was difficult to implement. (one = the first; the other = the second.)

Others — pointing at the rest of a group: Some employees preferred the new system, while others preferred the old one. (others = other employees.)

Reference Can Point Forward, Too

Reference is usually backwardThe company introduced a system. It was expensive points back to something already mentioned. But it can occasionally point forward:

This problem became clear later: the system could not handle large datasets.

Here this problem arrives before its own explanation. When a reader meets a this/these phrase with nothing obvious behind it to explain, the right move is to keep reading forward — the explanation is often sitting just past a colon or in the very next clause.

This was the main problem: employees had not received adequate training. Same pattern — this comes first, and the explanation follows the colon. Reference doesn't always live in the previous sentence; sometimes it's still ahead of you.

Cohesion Through Contrast, Cause, Time, and Addition

Cohesion isn't only about tracking the same idea — a paragraph also stays connected through the relationships between its ideas.

Four relationship types that hold a paragraph together

Contrast: Traditional systems are relatively slow. However, modern platforms can process data rapidly.traditional systems vs. modern platforms creates a lexical contrast.

Cause: The company reduced staff. As a result, processing times increased.reduced staff → as a result → processing increased.

Addition: The system reduced costs. In addition, it improved processing speed. Moreover, it provided better reporting capabilities. — benefit, then a second benefit, then a stronger, reinforcing third benefit.

Cohesion Through Restatement

Saying the same thing again, more plainly

The system is highly efficient. In other words, it can process large volumes of data with relatively few resources.

Efficient gets restated, in plainer terms, as processing large volumes of data with relatively few resources — the same concept, given a second, more concrete form.

A Six-Step Method for Finding a Lexical Chain

Worked Example: The Remote Work Paragraph

Finding the chain in a shorter passage

Remote work has become increasingly common. Many employees now perform their jobs from home. This arrangement can provide greater flexibility, but it may also reduce face-to-face interaction. Some workers report higher satisfaction, whereas others experience difficulties maintaining communication with colleagues.

Lexical chain: remote work → employees → jobs → arrangement → interaction → workers → communication → colleagues. Central topic: remote work and its effects.

Notice this arrangement — not an exact noun repetition, but a fresh label for remote work from home. And notice others near the end — it means other workers, pulling a contrast out of the group introduced by some workers just before it.

Full Paragraph Analysis: AI in Logistics

These capabilities may help companies improve planning and reduce operational delays. However, the use of such systems also creates new challenges. Employees may need additional training, and organizations must establish procedures for evaluating AI-generated recommendations. These requirements mean that successful AI adoption involves more than simply purchasing new software. Instead, companies must also develop the skills and processes necessary to use the technology effectively.

Reference chain: artificial intelligence → AI systems → these capabilities → such systems → these requirements → AI adoption → new software → the technology — one broad topic, renamed across the whole paragraph.

Lexical chain, grouped by subtopic:

  • Technology: AI, systems, software, technology
  • Logistics: logistics, demand, disruptions, planning, operational delays
  • Organization: companies, employees, organizations
  • Implementation: training, procedures, recommendations, adoption, skills, processes

Reading the pointers precisely: these capabilities packages the whole previous list — analyze data, predict demand, identify disruptions — into one phrase. Such systems avoids repeating AI systems outright. These requirements points back to the two items just named: training and procedures. And instead, in the final sentence, corrects an idea the paragraph is actively rejecting — simply purchasing software is not enough — and replaces it with what actually is needed: skills and processes.

Central argument: AI can benefit logistics operations, but successful adoption requires more than software; organizations also need trained employees, appropriate procedures, skills, and processes. Read only the vocabulary — AI, logistics, data, demand, training — and you'd get a topic list. Read the cohesion, and the whole argument comes with it.

Three Reading Rules Worth Automating

This/these — ask exactly which earlier idea is being labelled

The system failed repeatedly. This problem…this problem = the repeated failure, not just "the system."

Employees lacked training and resources. These limitations…these limitations = the lack of training and the lack of resources — both items in the previous sentence, packaged together.

Such — expect a category, not a single item

Such + noun almost always means "this type of" or "the kind just described." Look one sentence back for the category being named, not for one exact noun to match.

Nominalization — expect the next sentence to pick the noun back up

Implemented → implementation. Evaluated → evaluation. Improved → improvement. Whenever a sentence turns a verb into a noun, expect the following sentence to reuse that noun — often behind this — to keep building on the same action.

Any one of these relationships, on its own, is a small grammatical detail. All of them working together are what make a paragraph feel like one continuous argument instead of a list of unrelated facts.

Guided Reading Practice

Read this passage once for its overall meaning, then go back and trace two separate chains through it: one tracking a single entity as it gets renamed sentence by sentence, and one tracking the surrounding topic vocabulary.

The port authority introduced a new container-tracking platform last year. The system allowed shippers and customs officials to monitor cargo location in real time. This visibility reduced document- processing delays and improved coordination between terminal operators and inland transport providers. Such improvements were especially valuable during peak shipping seasons, when congestion at the gates had previously caused lengthy vessel queues. However, smaller freight forwarders reported difficulty adapting to the new platform, and these difficulties required additional staff training before the benefits became fully apparent.

Reference chain: container-tracking platform → the system → this visibility → such improvements → the new platform → these difficulties — one central entity, renamed six times without a single exact repetition.

Lexical chain: port authority, container, shippers, customs officials, cargo, terminal operators, inland transport providers, congestion, gates, vessel queues, freight forwarders — the surrounding port-operations vocabulary that keeps the topic visible throughout.

Before moving on, work out for yourself exactly what this visibility, such improvements, and these difficulties each package — one is a single previous noun, and two are packaging a whole preceding idea. That distinction is the core reading skill this lesson has been building.
