Introduction
Every skill this course has built so far — reading a sentence, tracking a paragraph, following inference, weighing a causal claim — comes together today inside a larger structure: the argument. In English nonfiction, "argument" doesn't mean a quarrel; it means a central position, defended with reasons and evidence, often while acknowledging and answering an opposing view. Business books, psychology, history, opinion writing, research papers, and technology journalism all lean on this same underlying skeleton. Learn to see it, and a dense argumentative passage stops looking like a wall of equally-weighted sentences and starts looking like a structure with clearly defined parts.
What Is an Argument?
A claim, defended with reasons and evidence
Basic structure: Claim → Reason → Evidence.
Companies should invest more in employee training. (claim) Employees need time to adapt to new technologies. (reason) Research shows that training can improve employees' ability to use unfamiliar systems. (evidence)
Every argumentative paragraph you'll meet from here on is some variation on this same three-part skeleton.
Claim
The position the author is defending
Remote work can improve employee flexibility.
This is a claim — a proposition the author still has to establish, not a settled fact you should accept on sight. A claim doesn't have to sound like an opinion to be one: Digital technology has transformed logistics operations looks factual, but it's still a claim, and a careful reader still asks: what evidence supports this?
Main Claim and Subclaims
One big claim, several smaller ones supporting it
Technology is changing workplaces. Employees need new skills. Organizations face implementation challenges. Training is therefore essential.
Central claim: successful technology adoption requires employee training. Underneath a main claim like this, a text often builds subclaims: training improves familiarity; training reduces implementation difficulties; training helps employees adapt. Each subclaim is one supporting piece of the larger argument.
Reason
Answering the question 'why should I accept this?'
Companies should provide employee training because new systems require employees to learn unfamiliar processes.
Claim: companies should provide training. Reason: new systems require learning. A reason answers the reader's natural next question after any claim: why?
Evidence, and an Evidence Hierarchy
What kind of support is actually backing the claim?
Evidence can take many forms: research findings, statistics, historical records, examples, observations, expert statements, documented facts, case studies, experimental results.
A rough hierarchy, useful for reading (not an absolute ranking — context always matters): stronger — multiple studies, systematic evidence, large datasets, replicated findings; moderate — an individual study, a case study, expert analysis; weaker/general — an anecdote, personal experience, a single example.
One example is not automatically strong evidence
One company successfully used AI and increased productivity.
This is an example — it does not, by itself, prove AI always increases productivity. Treating a single case as if it settled a general claim is one of the most common reasoning mistakes in persuasive writing, and it's exactly the gap this lesson trains you to notice.
Claim vs. Evidence

Attribution and Reporting Verb Strength
Whose claim is this, and how strongly is it reported?
According to researchers, employee training improves adoption.
According to signals attribution: the author is reporting the researchers' claim, not necessarily adopting it as their own. Researchers found that training improved performance names the source (researchers), the reporting verb (found), and the reported content.
Reporting-verb strength varies, building on Lesson 16: neutral — report, state, describe; stronger assertion — argue, claim, maintain; evidence-oriented — find, demonstrate, show; tentative — suggest, indicate. Researchers suggest that… is noticeably more cautious than researchers demonstrate that….

Claim: provide training. Reason: unfamiliar systems reduce productivity. Evidence: studies found trained employees adapt faster.
Explanation vs. Evidence
Why it makes sense, vs. what proves it happened
Explanation — why a claim logically makes sense: Training is important because unfamiliar systems require learning.
Evidence — external, observable support for the claim: A study found that trained employees completed tasks faster.
An explanation can sound persuasive without any evidence backing it at all — the two aren't interchangeable, and a careful reader checks whether a claim has actually earned evidence, or only a plausible-sounding explanation.
Example vs. Evidence
For example, for instance, such as — signalling an illustration, not proof
For example: For example, one logistics company reduced processing time after introducing training. — a single case/example.
Compare: A controlled study of 500 employees found… — this is stronger, more systematic empirical evidence than a single example.
For instance: For instance, companies may use automated systems to reduce repetitive work. — same illustrative function as for example.
Such as: Organizations use several digital tools, such as ERP systems and cloud platforms. — introduces a list of examples.
All three phrases tell a reader "an illustration is coming" — not "proof is coming." Connect the example back to the main claim it's meant to support, and judge its weight accordingly.
Counterargument
What would someone who disagrees say?
A strong argumentative text doesn't only present its own side.
Main claim: Companies should provide more employee training. Counterargument: Some managers argue that training is expensive and reduces short-term productivity.
The author has now voiced the opposing concern directly, instead of ignoring it.
Rebuttal
The author's answer to that opposing concern
However, the long-term benefits of training may outweigh these short-term costs.
Structure: opposing view → response. A rebuttal doesn't have to prove the counterargument false outright — it has to answer it well enough that the main claim still stands.
Counterargument vs. Rebuttal, and Their Signal Words
Two different jobs, two different signal-word families
Counterargument asks: what might the other side say? Rebuttal asks: how does the author respond?
Some critics argue that automation eliminates jobs. (counterargument) However, historical evidence suggests that technological change can also create new types of employment. (rebuttal)

However, Nevertheless, Nonetheless
Three ways to pivot from a limitation back to the main point
However: Automation can reduce labor costs. However, implementation may be expensive. — a benefit, then a genuine qualification: don't treat the first claim as the whole story.
Nevertheless: The implementation was expensive. Nevertheless, the company continued with the project. — despite the previous problem, the action continued.
Nonetheless: The evidence is limited. Nonetheless, the findings are consistent with earlier research. — the limitation is real, but the claim still stands.
Concession
Yes, X is true — but Y is still more important
A sophisticated argument openly admits a limiting point instead of hiding it.
Although automation can reduce costs, it may require significant initial investment. Concession: automation reduces costs. Main point: initial investment may be significant.
Although X, Y — usually X is the concession/background, and Y is the author's actual direction: Although AI can improve efficiency, organizations must carefully evaluate its limitations — the emphasis lands on evaluate limitations, not on AI's efficiency gains.
Concession is not the same as rejection: Although the system is expensive, it may still be worthwhile explicitly accepts expensive — the author isn't disputing the cost, only arguing that it doesn't settle the question.
Even Though, Despite, and Despite the Fact That
Three grammatical variations on the same concession
Even though the system is expensive, the company decided to adopt it. — a stronger concession than plain although.
Despite the high cost, the company adopted the system. — despite + noun phrase, compare with although + clause.
Despite the fact that the system was expensive, the company adopted it. — more formal, longer, same underlying meaning.
Qualification
Weakening or limiting a claim, rather than rejecting it
Technology can improve productivity, but only under certain conditions.
Original claim: technology can improve productivity. Qualification: only under certain conditions — the claim survives, narrowed.
Common qualification words to watch for: may · might · often · generally · usually · in some cases · to some extent · partly · potentially · under certain conditions · in particular · for some groups · not necessarily.
Quantifiers Control Argument Strength
All, most, many, and some are not interchangeable claims
All employees benefit from remote work. — very strong, universal.
Many employees benefit from remote work. — limited.
Some employees may benefit from remote work. — even more cautious.
Quantifiers like all, most, many, some, few, rarely, often, generally, typically, always, never are not decoration — they control exactly how much a claim covers. Generally ("usually, not always"), often ("not always"), and some ("cannot be read as most" — a direct callback to Lesson 21) each narrow a claim in a precise, checkable way.
Reading the Strength of an Evidence-Based Claim
Suggests, demonstrates, and the language of insufficient evidence
Evidence suggests that training improves adoption. — cautious, evidence-based.
Evidence demonstrates that the intervention was effective. — stronger than suggests, though its exact strength still depends on the evidence's actual quality.
The available evidence does not support the claim that the policy improved productivity. — evidence is insufficient or contrary; this does not necessarily mean the policy definitely failed.
There is no evidence that the system caused the decline. — an absence of supporting evidence, not proof that causation is impossible.
There is evidence against the proposed explanation. — stronger than simply no evidence for it; here evidence actively points the other way.
Claim-Evidence Mismatch and Overgeneralization
A broad claim resting on narrow evidence is a genuine reasoning flaw
One employee reported that AI improved productivity. Therefore, AI improves productivity for all workers.
This is logically weak: one example ≠ universal evidence. This pattern — A happened in one case, therefore A always happens — is called overgeneralization, and spotting it is one of the most valuable critical-reading skills in this whole lesson.
Correlation-Causation Error and Alternative Explanations
Could something else explain the result?
Employees who use AI tools tend to earn higher salaries. Invalid automatic conclusion: AI tools cause higher salaries. Other factors — experience, education, job type, industry, location — could easily be doing the real work.
Company X adopted new software and productivity increased. Possible explanation: the software caused the increase. Alternative: the company also hired experienced employees around the same time — perhaps both factors mattered.
Signal phrases worth recognising: could also ("the improvement could also have resulted from better employee training" — introduces an alternative explanation) and one possible explanation ("one possible explanation is that demand declined unexpectedly" — flagging explicitly that possible is not established).
A Full Worked Argument

Organizations should provide structured training when introducing new technologies. Employees often experience difficulties when they encounter unfamiliar systems. Research has shown that structured training can reduce these difficulties and improve user confidence. Some managers, however, argue that training is expensive and may reduce productivity in the short term. Nevertheless, these costs may be outweighed by the long-term benefits of faster adoption and fewer operational errors. Therefore, organizations should view training as an investment rather than simply as an additional cost.

The Extended Argument Skeleton

Advanced argumentative text often extends the basic skeleton with a qualification — narrowing the claim rather than abandoning it.
Training can improve adoption, although its effectiveness depends on training quality and organizational support. Main claim: training improves adoption. Qualification: depends on quality/support — this makes the claim more precise, not weaker.
Sophisticated Rebuttal Moves
Conceding a point is valid without abandoning the claim
Valid but incomplete: Training can be expensive. However, focusing only on its immediate cost ignores the long-term cost of implementation failures. — the objection is accepted as valid, but treated as incomplete.
"This objection overlooks…": This objection overlooks the long-term benefits of training. — names exactly what the opposing view is missing.
"This view fails to consider…": This view fails to consider the effects of employee turnover. — a direct challenge to the opposing view's completeness.
"While this is true…": While this is true, it does not necessarily follow that the policy should be abandoned. — yes, X is true; but Y does not follow from it.
"It does not follow that…": The system is expensive. It does not follow that it is ineffective. — flags a logical gap: expensive does not, on its own, guarantee ineffective.
"Does not necessarily mean…": A correlation between the variables does not necessarily mean that one causes the other. — the single most important phrase in this family, blocking association-as-causation.
"Not enough to… / sufficient to…": Evidence of correlation is not enough to establish causation. vs. The evidence is sufficient to support the conclusion. — naming exactly whether the evidence clears the bar the claim requires.
Burden of Evidence
A bigger claim needs bigger evidence
Exercise may improve sleep. — a moderate claim, needing only moderate evidence.
Exercise always improves sleep in every adult. — an extremely strong claim, requiring far stronger evidence to justify it.
Before accepting any claim, ask: how much evidence would a claim this size actually require — and does the passage supply that much?
Author's Position and Attribution Tracking
A reported claim is not automatically the author's own view
Critics argue that... names critics' position. If the author then writes However…, that's often where their own position emerges — which is why tracking who is making each claim matters throughout a passage, not just at the start.
According to researchers, the intervention was effective — who believes this? Researchers — not necessarily the author personally.
The author argues that… — this phrase specifically marks the passage's central position, once you've located it.
An expert's opinion is evidence of belief, not proof
A famous expert says X, therefore X must be true — this is a weak argument, known as an appeal to authority. Expertise can be useful supporting context, but a reader should still ask: what independent evidence supports the expert's claim?
Argument Structure Across Domains
The same skeleton, in four different fields
History: The policy contributed to economic instability because… followed by tax records, contemporary accounts, and production figures as evidence — the author isn't just narrating history, they're defending a historical interpretation.
Business: Companies should decentralize decision-making because local managers respond faster to changing conditions — claim, reason, with case studies or performance data as likely evidence.
Science: The findings suggest that the treatment may improve recovery — note the double qualifier (suggest, may); read this as a cautious claim, not "the treatment definitely works."
Psychology: People often rely on mental shortcuts when making decisions (claim) → experiments have shown… (evidence) → however, these shortcuts are not always harmful (qualification) — a sophisticated, three-part structure inside one short paragraph.
Argument vs. Information, Description vs. Argument
Not every paragraph is defending a position
Informational: The company was founded in 1995. It expanded internationally in 2005. It opened a new office in Germany in 2010. — mostly history/information, no position being defended.
Argumentative: The company should expand internationally because… — a position, defended.
Description answers what is it? (The system has three major components.) Argument answers what should we believe or do, and why? (The system should be redesigned because its current structure creates unnecessary complexity.) Recognising which mode you're in changes how critically you should read.
Finding the Main Claim

At the end of a paragraph, ask: what is the author trying to establish? Which statement receives the most support? Which statement has a reason given before it? Which statement has evidence given after it? And where does therefore/thus/overall deliver the conclusion?
Master Example: Full Analysis
A complete argument, worked end to end
Organizations should not assume that purchasing advanced software will automatically improve performance. Although modern systems can automate routine tasks, successful implementation also requires employee training and effective management. Research suggests that employees adapt more quickly when they receive structured support during technological transitions. Critics may argue that such training increases implementation costs. However, this objection overlooks the potential costs of system failure, employee frustration, and inefficient use of the technology. Therefore, organizations should evaluate technological investments not only in terms of software costs but also in terms of the human and organizational resources required for successful implementation.
Claim: organizations should not assume software automatically improves performance. Reason: implementation requires training and management. Evidence: research suggests employees adapt faster with structured support. Counterargument: training increases costs. Rebuttal: this ignores the costs of failure and poor implementation. Conclusion: evaluate technology investment together with human and organizational resources.
Final central argument: technology investment alone does not guarantee successful implementation; organizational and human factors are equally important.
Taxonomy: how the parts of an argument relate
An ARGUMENT is built from a CLAIM plus its SUPPORT. Support usually includes a REASON, EVIDENCE, and sometimes an EXAMPLE. From the reason, an author may introduce a COUNTERARGUMENT, which the author then answers with a REBUTTAL, often followed by a QUALIFICATION that narrows the claim precisely, before the passage closes on a CONCLUSION. Holding this whole taxonomy in mind is what lets you label each sentence of a dense argumentative paragraph on a first read.

Read this passage once for its overall claim, then go back and label each sentence's role — claim, reason, evidence, counterargument, rebuttal, or conclusion — before checking the breakdown underneath it.
Port authorities should invest in automated gate systems to reduce truck turnaround time. Manual gate processing often creates long queues during peak arrival periods, which delays inland deliveries. A 2024 review of several regional terminals found that automated gates reduced average processing time by nearly a third. Some terminal operators argue that the upfront cost of automation is too high for smaller facilities to justify. However, this objection overlooks the recurring labor and congestion costs that manual processing imposes year after year. Smaller terminals may therefore still benefit from automation, particularly if it is implemented in phases rather than all at once.

Part D — Advanced Argument Analysis
Read this paragraph for questions 9-16: Remote work can provide important benefits for organizations, including lower office costs and access to a wider talent pool. Employees may also value the flexibility that remote arrangements provide. However, critics argue that remote work can reduce collaboration and make it more difficult for managers to coordinate teams. Although these concerns are legitimate, they do not necessarily mean that remote work is ineffective. Organizations can reduce some of these problems through clear communication procedures, appropriate technology, and regular team interaction. Therefore, the effectiveness of remote work depends less on whether employees work remotely than on how the arrangement is designed and managed.
