Level 1 — Foundation · Instant Sentences
Drill 10: Referring Back Instantly, Without Repeating the Noun
Say a second sentence that refers back to your first one with he, it, or they instead of repeating the noun — the spoken version of Lesson 10's reference-tracking skill, produced live instead of traced on the page.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this drill, you should be able to:
- Say a second sentence using a pronoun that correctly refers back to the first one
- Match the pronoun's number to its antecedent without pausing to check
- Shadow the natural, reduced pronunciation of pronouns in fast speech
Introduction
Lesson 10 taught you that a fluent writer almost never repeats the same noun twice in a row — a pronoun carries it forward instead. In speech, native speakers go one step further: pronouns get said quickly and lightly, almost swallowed into the words around them. This drill trains both the grammar and that reduced, natural rhythm.
Shadow the Model
The manager checked the report. She approved it. The team finished the task. They left early.
Listen once, then shadow it — notice how lightly "she," "it," and "they" are said compared to the nouns before them. A pronoun almost never carries the stress of the sentence; the noun it replaces already did that job one sentence earlier.
Your Turn
Your Turn
Say one short sentence naming a person or thing. Immediately after, without pausing, say a second sentence about it using only a pronoun — no repeating the noun. Do this five times.
Say sentence one, then sentence two with a pronoun — no repeated noun
Record Yourself
Say five noun-then-pronoun sentence pairs out loud, then compare your rhythm to the shadowed model.
Model Answer
Show a model answer
There's no single correct pair — "The driver arrived late. He apologized right away." or "The containers were damaged. They had to be replaced." both work. What matters is that the second sentence used a pronoun instead of repeating the noun, and the pronoun's number matched.
Vocabulary in Context

“In fast speech, 'them' is reduced to 'em'.”
Self-Check
Self-Check
- Did your second sentence use a pronoun instead of repeating the noun?
- Did the pronoun's number correctly match its antecedent?
- Did your shadowed pronouns sound light and quick, not stressed like the noun before them?
This closes the Foundation speaking module. The next level's drills combine every skill from lessons 1 through 10 into longer, spontaneous spoken explanations.
