Drill 15: Saying a Reduced Clause Live

Compress two spoken ideas into one sentence, live, using a participle phrase instead of a full relative clause — the same shrinking Lesson 15 taught you to expand back when reading.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this drill, you should be able to:

  • Shadow a sentence containing a participle phrase without slowing down mid-phrase
  • Compress two spoken ideas into one sentence using a V-ing or V3 participle phrase, live
  • Attach the participle phrase to the correct noun, immediately, without a planning pause

Introduction

Lesson 15 taught you to mentally expand a compressed phrase like "the workers operating the crane" back to its full form. This drill asks you to build that same compression live — hearing two ideas and saying them as one sentence, with a participle phrase doing the work of a whole clause.

Shadow the Model

The technician repairing the engine finished before noon.

Listen once all the way through, then shadow it. Notice "repairing the engine" is spoken as one smooth unit, at the same pace as the rest of the sentence — a participle phrase never gets a pause on either side of it.

Your Turn

Your Turn

12s

Two ideas: the manager sent the report; the manager arrived late today. When the timer starts, say ONE sentence combining both, using a participle phrase to compress the first idea onto "manager" — speak immediately, no planning pause.

Record Yourself

Say your combined sentence, then record it and compare against the model.

Model Answer

Show a model answer

Something close to: "The manager sending the report arrived late today." There's some room for wording, but the participle phrase must attach to "manager" and use the active V-ing form, since the manager is doing the sending.
