Drill 22: Shadowing and Decoding a Dense Sentence Live
Hear a complex noun phrase spoken naturally, then instantly say its plain-English meaning out loud — decoding under time pressure, not on the page.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this drill, you should be able to:
- Shadow a dense noun phrase at natural speed without stumbling over the long subject
- Find the head noun fast enough to speak a plain-English paraphrase within a few seconds
- Say the paraphrase as one fluent sentence, not a list of disconnected words
Introduction
Lesson 22 taught you to find the head noun of a dense phrase before interpreting anything around it. This drill tests whether you can do that live: hear a long, professional-sounding sentence spoken at normal speed, and say its plain-English meaning immediately, before you have time to write anything down.
Shadow the Model
The ability of the new system to process large amounts of data has reduced the extent to which staff rely on manual checks.
Listen once, all the way through, without trying to decode it yet. Then shadow it, keeping pace with the whole sentence even though its subject is long — don't slow down or pause in the middle of the noun phrase.
Your Turn
Your Turn
Once you've shadowed the sentence above, say its plain-English meaning out loud in one sentence — find the head noun first ("ability"), then say what it means in ordinary words. Start the moment the timer begins.
Say the plain-English meaning now
Record Yourself
Shadow the sentence, then say its plain-English meaning, and record both.
Model Answer
Show a model answer
Something close to: "The new system can process a lot of data, so staff now rely less on manual checks." There's no single correct wording — what matters is that you found the head noun (ability, then extent), spoke a complete sentence, and didn't just repeat the original words back unchanged.

Self-Check
Self-Check
- Did you shadow the full sentence without slowing down mid-phrase?
- Did you find the head noun before trying to paraphrase?
- Did your spoken paraphrase come out as one fluent sentence, not a word list?
