Learning Objectives

By the end of this drill, you should be able to:

  • Answer a past-time question using Past Simple, instantly
  • Answer a present-relevance question using Present Perfect, instantly
  • Answer a future question using will, instantly

Introduction

Lesson 5 taught you to read a verb's form and know instantly where it sits on the timeline. This drill asks for the opposite direction, live: hear a time question, and produce the correct verb form immediately, with no pause to work out the rule first.

Shadow the Model

I finished it yesterday. I have already finished it. I will finish it tomorrow.

The three sentences answer three different questions about the exact same task. Shadow all three, and notice how little the sentence changes — almost everything stays the same except the verb form itself.

Your Turn

6s

Pick one question type at random before the timer starts: "What did you do yesterday?", "What have you already done today?", or "What will you do tomorrow?" When the timer starts, answer immediately with the matching tense. Do this five times, mixing all three question types.

Answer now — match the tense to the question, no planning pause

Model Answer

Show a model answer

There's no single correct sentence — "I checked the report yesterday," "I have already checked the report," and "I will check the report tomorrow" are all correct answers to their matching question. What matters is that the verb form matched the question's timeframe immediately, without a pause to think it through.
