Learning Objectives

By the end of this drill, you should be able to:

  • State a broad claim immediately, with no planning pause
  • Narrow it live using 'however' and 'therefore', without losing the thread
  • Land on a final spoken position more precise than the opening claim

Introduction

Lesson 71 taught you to catch an author narrowing a claim across a passage. This drill makes you do it live: start broad, correct yourself out loud with "however," and land on a sharper final claim — all without a script.

Shadow the Model

Automated systems can reduce processing time. However, faster processing doesn't always mean better decisions. Therefore, automation helps most when the decision itself is simple and repetitive.

Listen once straight through, then shadow it. Notice how "however" and "therefore" both land with a short pause right after them — that pause is doing work, signalling a turn in the argument, not a hesitation.

Your Turn

30s

You'll be given a topic. In 30 seconds, say a broad claim about it, then say "However," and add a real limitation, then say "Therefore," and narrow the claim into a final, more precise position. Topic: automated customs clearance systems.

Speak now — broad claim, however, therefore, final position

Record Yourself

Record your 30-second claim-narrowing, then play it back and check the shape held together.

Model Answer

Show a model answer

There's no single correct wording — what matters is the shape. One natural version: "Automated customs clearance can dramatically speed up processing. However, it only works well when shipment documentation is already complete and accurate. Therefore, automation helps fastest at ports that have already standardized their paperwork." Check your own attempt for the same three moves: broad claim, real limitation, narrower final position.

“In an interview you must narrow a claim live, with no time to plan.”

Self-Check

Self-Check

  • Did you speak immediately, with no pause to plan the whole thing first?
  • Did "however" introduce a real limitation, not just a filler pause?
  • Did your final sentence land somewhere more precise than your opening claim?
