Task 75: Comparing Two Sources

Write the same claim as reported by two different sources, then judge in writing which is more trustworthy and why — the production side of Lesson 75's source-quality skill.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this task, you should be able to:

  • Write the same claim as it might appear from two different kinds of sources
  • Judge which source is more independent and reliable, and why
  • Explain what genuinely independent, converging evidence would look like

Introduction

Not all evidence for the same claim is equally trustworthy. Lesson 75 taught you to judge source quality, not just whether a source exists. This task asks you to write two versions of the same claim from different kinds of sources, then judge them yourself.

Judging Source Quality

Core Concept

Ask: who produced this evidence, and do they have a stake in the result? Is it a direct measurement or someone's secondhand account? Is it one isolated source, or does it converge with other, independent evidence? A manufacturer's own performance claim and an independent lab's test of the same product are not equally trustworthy, even if they report the identical number.

Example

The manufacturer's brochure states the new engine reduces fuel consumption by 15%. Versus: An independent transport-agency test measured a 9% reduction under real operating conditions. The second is more trustworthy — independent measurement, real conditions, no direct stake in the product's success.

2 sentences + judgment15 min

Write the same claim about a product, policy, or process as it might be reported by (1) the party that benefits from the claim being true, and (2) an independent, disinterested source. Then write a judgment sentence naming which is more trustworthy and the specific reason why.

Vocabulary in Context

independentadjectiveformal

not connected to, or benefiting from, the outcome being reported (স্বাধীন/নিরপেক্ষ)

Often with independent source, independent review, independent of

“An independent auditor confirmed the figures.”

convergeverbformal

when separate, independent pieces of evidence point to the same conclusion (একত্রিত হওয়া)

Often with converge on, findings converge, evidence converges

“Three independent studies converge on the same conclusion.”

Model Answer

Show a model answer

The software vendor's website claims the new system cuts processing errors by 30%. An independent audit commissioned by three client companies measured a 14% reduction over six months of real use. Judgment: the independent audit is more trustworthy — the vendor benefits directly from a higher number, while the audit was commissioned by parties with no stake in inflating the result, and it measured real use rather than a controlled demo.

Self-Check

Self-Check

  • Did your two versions genuinely differ in who produced the evidence, not just in wording?
  • Did your judgment name a concrete reason — independence, measurement conditions, stake in the outcome — not just "it seems more reliable"?
  • Would a reader understand exactly what would make the evidence even stronger still?
