Drill 1: Saying a Subject and Verb Instantly

Say a complete Subject + Verb sentence about something in front of you, before a short timer runs out — turning Lesson 1's core sentence shape into a reflex instead of a rule.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this drill, you should be able to:

  • Say a complete Subject + Verb sentence with nothing to translate first
  • Notice the moment your brain tries to build a Bangla sentence before the English one
  • Compare your own pace to a native shadowed model

Introduction

Lesson 1 taught you that the smallest complete English sentence is just Subject + Verb: People think. Birds fly. Reading that pattern and producing it out loud, under time pressure, are two different skills. This drill trains the second one — no time to build a Bangla sentence first, because the prompt never gives you one.

Shadow the Model

People walk. The phone rings. Water boils. Children play. The door opens.

Listen once, all the way through, without speaking. Then play it again and say each one half a second behind the recording — notice that every sentence is only two words, said quickly, with no pause between Subject and Verb.

Your Turn

Your Turn

6s

Look around you and pick something that is doing something — a person walking, a fan turning, a phone ringing. When the timer starts, say one Subject + Verb sentence about it out loud, immediately. Do this five times with five different things.

Say it now — Subject, then Verb, nothing else

6

Record Yourself

Say five Subject + Verb sentences out loud, then play yourself back and compare your pace to the shadowed model.

Model Answer

Show a model answer

Any true Subject + Verb sentence about something actually around you counts — "The fan turns," "My phone rings," "The rain falls." There is no single correct answer; what matters is that you said it before the timer ended and without composing a Bangla sentence first.

Vocabulary in Context

ringverbneutral

to make a clear ringing sound (বাজা)

Often with the phone rings, ring loudly, keeps ringing

“The phone in the gate office rings whenever a truck arrives without a booking.”

turnverbneutral

to move in a circle or change direction (ঘোরা)

Often with turn left, turn around, turn towards

“The trucks turn left at the scale house and queue for the inspection lane.”

Self-Check

Self-Check

  • Did you say a complete Subject + Verb sentence before the timer reached zero, for at least 3 of your 5 tries?
  • Did you notice yourself forming a Bangla sentence first, even once?
  • Did your shadowed pace get closer to the recording on your second attempt?

Next: Speaking 2 — adding one spoken detail to a Subject + Verb sentence, instantly, the way Lesson 2 adds modifiers around a simple core.
