Drill 2: Adding One Spoken Detail, Instantly

Say a short sentence, then immediately add one spoken detail to it — an adjective, an adverb, or a 'where' — practising Lesson 2's modifiers out loud instead of on the page.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this drill, you should be able to:

  • Say a short core sentence, then add one modifier to it without stopping to plan
  • Use an adjective, an adverb, or a short 'where' phrase correctly under time pressure
  • Keep speaking through the addition instead of restarting the sentence

Introduction

Lesson 2 taught you to spot a sentence's core underneath its decoration. Speaking works the opposite way: you say the core first, and the decoration has to arrive while you're already talking, with no pause to plan it. That's exactly what this drill practises.

Shadow the Model

The manager reviewed the report. The manager carefully reviewed the report. The manager carefully reviewed the report this morning.

Notice the model doesn't restart the sentence to add a detail — it keeps the same words and simply extends them forward. Shadow it twice: once at the first length, once at the full length.

Your Turn

Your Turn

7s

Say a short sentence about something you did today — three or four words, Subject + Verb + Object. As soon as you finish it, without pausing, add one more detail: how, or where, or when. Do this five times.

Say the sentence, then keep going — add the detail without stopping

Record Yourself

Say five short sentences, each with one added detail tacked on, then compare your fluency to the shadowed model.

Model Answer

Show a model answer

There is no single correct sentence — what matters is that the addition came without a restart. For example: "I checked the schedule. I checked the schedule quickly." or "I checked the schedule this morning." Either extension is correct as long as it kept moving forward instead of starting over.

Self-Check

Self-Check

  • Did you add the detail by continuing forward, rather than stopping and restarting the whole sentence?
  • Was the detail you added a genuine adjective, adverb, or short "where"/"when" phrase?
  • Did at least 3 of your 5 attempts finish before the timer ended?

Next: Speaking 3 — saying a whole verb phrase, including a modal or a helping verb, as one unmistakably fluent unit, following Lesson 3.
